A Winning Combination: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Luxury Hotel New York

Posted on 28 August 2010 by Addy

If you are an art aficionado looking for the perfect getaway to the Big Apple, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, occupying a four block section along Fifth Avenue in Central Park, is only a short walk from some truly spectacular accommodations. If you google “luxury hotel New York,” you’ll find some wonderful facilities such as The Mark on Madison Avenue and 77th Street, only 4 blocks from this most amazing collection of art masterpieces.

The “Met,” as it is affectionately known, was established in 1870 and now possesses over two million works of art. These pieces are displayed on rotation in a number of galleries.  The Met offers gallery talks, guided tours, lectures, films, concerts, drawing sessions, and much more. There are, in all, more than 20,000 educational programs and events each year. For members, especially donors at higher than basic levels, there are some extra special events.

The Met Serves Its Purpose Well

The museum was started with a charter requiring it to promote education, use, and preservation of art.  Thus far, for well over a century, the Met has fulfilled this obligation magnificently. The original building in Central Park (which the museum moved into in 1880) was eventually surrounded by additions, and the complex was architecturally tied together with a master plan adopted in 1971 and completed in 1991. The Met now contains more than two million square feet of exhibition space. There are galleries specializing in Egyptian art, America art, impressionist and post-impressionist painters, modern art, art from Korea and other Asian countries, African art, Greek art, and Roman art, to list just small portion of them. Whether you are interested in a few specific objects that the Met has on display, or you want to take in as much as you can of the whole facility, you are not likely to be disappointed by a visit to this fabulous house of treasures.
