Occupy movement Protestors in south Florida took their concerns about corporate greed to a new level today, by blockading the Camino Real bridge in Boca Raton this evening, snarling rush hour traffic.

Activists were protesting the 2012 GAIM Conference, which sells itself as “one of the most important conferences for the hedge fund industry.” Last years attendee list of over 500 included prominent banks and investors involved in funding private prisons and home foreclosures. The current list of attendees remains a secret.

Past attendees include representatives from BP, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America. The GAIM conference schedule includes an outdoor cocktail party this evening at the Boca Resort.

The bridge blockade was an attempt to disrupt the cocktail hour and to bring public attention to the list of “corporate criminals” gathered in Boca. High on the list of concerns for the protestors are fraudulent bank foreclosures and the building of private prison & immigrant detention facilities.

Wearing “lockdown” devices, the three anti-corporate greed activists, laid down on the bridge effectively stopping rush hour traffic for an hour, between 5:00 and 6:30. Special operations police teams were called to the site to remove the lockdown devices that were linking the protestors together. The three were arrested and are expected to appear before a judge tomorrow morning at the Palm Beach County jail.

“Every day we see corporate power destroying our communities. From environmental disasters to private prisons, corporations are operating with impunity,” said Ana Rodriguez before being arrested. “While the bank leaders drink cocktails and toast to increased profits, people across the globe are being hurt by corporate greed.”

Another protestor scaled a tree alongside the bridge and hung a large banner that read: “What Would Robin Hood Do?” The banner was taken down by a fire truck and confiscated by Boca Raton police.

Police expect protestors to return tomorrow for day three of the GAIM conference.

There is a place – a very special place – located in Glastonbury, a small town in Somerset, England. A place that comes up in many conversations, books and movies. This is not a surprise. After all, the myths and legends that have always surrounded this small community are numerous and well-known.

For Christians, it is believed that Glastonbury is where Joseph of Arimathea came with his men (the group numbering 13) to hide the Holy Grail, thrust his staff into Wearyall Hill, and produced the Glastonbury Thorn – the original thorn tree. It is also believed by many that King Arthur and his knights (the group numbering 13) entered the legendary island of Avalon through a ‘door’ in Glastonbury. In fact, in 1191 monks at the abbey claimed to have found the graves of Arthur and Guinevere to the south of the Lady Chapel of the Abbey Church. It has also been suggested that St. Michael’s Church – the remains of which still stand atop Glastonbury Tor – was the location where Michael and his angel brethren (another group of 13) entered the world to save, fight, defend, or bring law to the people of this earth.

There are colored lights seen (and photographed) in the sky over Glastonbury; and there are odd sounds and images that have been seen (and recorded) of ghostly figures that seem to inhabit the small town.

It was in 1935 however, when a landscape zodiac was first discovered. The ‘signs’ having been formed by natural features such as roads, streams and field boundaries that were situated around Glastonbury. This ancient zodiac was supposedly a perfect match to the stars above – a perfect match of 13 signs. Capricorn’s “eye” was a haystack; the wing of the Aquarius phoenix was a road laid in 1782; the sign of Cancer was a network of 18^th century drainage ditches and paths. Many features ‘supposedly’ came together to show an ancient zodiac that leads people to the roofless, St. Michael’s Tower that sits atop the mysterious, Glastonbury Tor.

As everyone knows – fiction is fiction. BUT in every piece of fiction there is an undeniable fact that the fiction was built upon. In a remarkable new book that has just been released, this subject has been taken one step further. Perhaps there are facts embedded in the Arthurian legend, the legend of the Holy Grail, and the zodiac signs that could very well be put together to lead to a treasure that no one has even thought of yet.

Like The DaVinci Code, 13 (which is the first book in a brand new adventure series called, Tallent & Lowery), utilizes some very real facts that have been placed side-by-side in order to form a puzzle that has readers running to their computers in order to look up each and every detail.

Debates are already beginning over some of the very real characters and locations that this author has been able to piece together. Whereas others believe him to be exactly what he proclaimed himself to be – the Devil, personified.

Aleister Crowley, Jack the Ripper, Sarah Winchester, Andrew Carnegie, Rudolf Steiner – what could all these people from such completely different locations have to do with any myth or legend that may reside in the small town of Glastonbury? Well…in order to know the answer to that, one must begin the adventure.

A hint, perhaps? Included in the puzzle is information about The Golden Dawn, which was an organization that included some pretty popular members throughout time. Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner – and even the poet, Yeats – were members. The meetings that occurred between these three men at various times throughout history is yet another piece of the puzzle that heads readers straight to Glastonbury.

This is a novel that reviewers are calling one of the best puzzles to ever be written, and the upside for all readers out there is that 13 is only the first of seven that are about to be told. Already, there are production companies debating on who should play the characters of Leah Tallent & Gareth Lowery – forty-something’s or the late-twenty-something’s that Hollywood has to offer. New World Gold Corporation, based in Boca Raton, is preparing to upgrade its mills. Mill capacity is to increase from 40 tons per day to 150 tons per day. Once completed, the Company says the upgrades are expected to increase production to more than 100 ounces of gold each day.

The company arranged $500,000 in finance, at 9% interest. The arrangement pays back the money over 3 years.

With its own operating mills, the Company plans to process its own reserves, and also purchase and process ore from other mines, to generate secondary cash flow. Concurrently, the company will continue to expand its own reserves through development work on existing leases.

The company has mines in Montana and Colorado and will need to hire additional staff.

The Holocaust and other tragedies in history may seem unimaginable to today’s youth. But Park Vista High School came up with an innovative and stimulating program to bring awareness of these atrocities to students that also translated into relevant issues facing teens today. For three months, they have studied the White Rose resistance movement, when a group of courageous college students almost their own age from Munich were the first to stir up the ranks of Hitler’s Nazis during l942-3. Students honored those who lived and died during that time on Holocaust Remembrance Day last month when they wore white roses, most probably a symbol of peace and purity. Donations from the effort were sent to the Save Darfur Coalition.

Mr. Moskovic from Hobe Sound was l3 years old when he was taken by the Nazis and when he was released in l945, was the only surviving member of his family. He escaped death three times from nothing short of miracles. His goal in sharing with students is “to keep the memory alive and to help our youth carry the truth in the future so people don’t forget.”  Students also shared how they have grown from the project, similar to PSAs, and posters which are part of a large quilt that covers a wall in the main cafeteria.

The White Rose program at Park Vista was made possible through a grant provided by LEAH, the League for Educational Awareness for the Holocaust based in Boca Raton, an organization that educates and advocates about the Holocaust and other genocides. It seeks to engage teachers in inspiring and motivating students to actively contribute to a kinder, more compassionate world.  To date, LEAH has funded more than 300 education grant awards which have touched the lives of 36,000 students in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. 

The White Rose group are most well-known for their leafleting and a secret organization started by Sophie and Hans Scholl of which several award-winning movies, documentaries, books and plays have been made. All seven members were convicted of treason and beheaded at a very young age. 

Media Specialist and coordinator of the school-wide program, Brigitta McTigue, spent her early years growing up in Munich, Germany where Sophie and her brother Hans Scholl and the White Rose students were considered heroes.  

“Our l6 and l7 year olds need to know this, so that they learn how to deal with prejudice, bigotry, bullying, and other human rights issues they face today. We hope this program has given them some tools to become more tolerant in their daily lives and to find healthy ways to stand up to hurtful and cruel actions done to other people merely because of differences.” 

Also collaborating and working together on the project was Sue Mehok, English teacher, as well as reading and social studies classes. Activities included reading chapters or books about the White Rose movement and watching the film “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days.” 

“As we teach students about the Holocaust, and other examples of genocide such as Darfur, Rwanda and Bosnia we are in a very real way repairing the world,” said Amanda McGee, executive director of LEAH. “They are taking the lessons that happened in the Holocaust of these very brave young people in the White Rose movement so that they can hopefully become better human beings.”  

Educational programs such as these are designed to help children learn about time periods and events that may seem incomprehensible to them. 

“They have no concept of what freedom is, because they have it,” said Ms. Mehok. 

While many schools offer only a few paragraphs in their history books about the Holocaust, Park Vista High School has a dedicated program, under the leadership of Eileen Shapiro who heads up Holocaust Studies for the school district of Palm Beach County. It was at her suggestion that McTigue applied for the grant from LEAH.

A State Official said that Ambassador Kapneck is not looking for publicity or public recognition for his work; he just wants to help people.

Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres flowed through Raymond Lee Jewelers in Boca Raton as guests arrived for the unveiling of a Diamond Horn Signature Pendant, for Nat King Cole Generation Hope Foundation. The night was fueled with fashion, philanthropy and a cause all were eager to learn more about.

The turnout was a Celebrity filled event to support music education in public schools and build awareness about the lack of funding available to those really need it.

Amongst the celebrities present were Casey and Timolin Cole (Nat King Cole’s Twin Daughters ); Jeff Josephson, the owner of Raymond Lee Jewelers, Franco Corso, the Italian Singer, Sherry Ratay, Award Winning Color Expert, Cara Rosenthal, of CBS’s Amazing Race, and Kesi Case, the Fashion Designer.

And schmoozing with the guests, the most notorious jewel thief, Walter Shaw. Hold on tight to your jewelry at all times, when hear this man.

“Keeping Music Alive” – NKC Generation Hope, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization in Florida. The foundation works to provide musical instruments, instruction, seminars, state-of-the-art recording equipment and funding to students with the greatest need and fewest resources in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties.

Laser surgery isn’t only for cosmetic effects. Veterinarians are now using the same techniques.

Two green sea turtles from the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center had bulbous tumors on their eyes and flippers. The tumors are directly related to pollution in South Florida’s waterways, according to a marine conservationist at the center.

Agricultural runoff and sewage often causes the fibropapilloma tumors in young green sea turtles.

On Friday, laser surgery procedures removed the tumors. The National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation provided the laser equipment. The non-profit foundation aims to preserve marine life, especially endangered species, in Florida’s oceans and waterways.
