Boca Raton is Spanish for “rat’s mouth”. The Spanish explorers gave the area where Boca Raton is located that name because the shape of the bays reminded them of rat’s mouths.
It is also reported that the jagged rocks in the bays gnawed at the boat’s securing lines, much as a rat gnaws at a rope, and the sailors named it Boca Raton for that reason. Still other sources say that pirates and other lawbreakers frequented the bays in the early days, and some of Boca Raton’s not-so-savory history includes the fact that for a while in the early part of the twentieth century, organized crime was big in this area. In Spain, “raton,” the Spanish word for “rat,” was often used to describe thieves, while “boca” is the Spanish word for “mouth,” so “Boca Raton” can also mean “thieves’ mouth”.
Thank goodness, the city does not resemble its name, and you can still enjoy wearing your designer jewelry when you visit one of the many restaurants found in and around Boca Raton, Florida, which is located near Miami. You can also enjoy the lovely beaches that are located in that area.
Boca Raton is a good family vacation destination. It has a reef park where you can swim and snorkel among the fish and other sea life found in that area. For more fun in the water, visit the water park that lets you float around a “lazy river” or careen down slides until you splash into a pool underneath.
For a souvenir, take home a Boca Raton futon cover. Its design looks like buildings, streets, and roads. It will make for an interesting conversation piece.
If you visit Boca Raton, and think you may enjoy retiring there, you may be surprised to find that real estate prices are fairly reasonable. A Boca Raton real estate agent will be glad to show you some of the available properties.

Start your day on a sweet note with this guilt-free pleasure!
1 (4-serving size) package sugar-free cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix
2 cups fat-free (skim) milk
1 quart fresh strawberries
2 tablespoons sugar
3 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
1 (3-ounce) package ladyfingers, split in half
1½ cups frozen fat-free whipped topping, thawed
2 tablespoons toasted sliced almonds (see Tip)
1. Prepare pudding according to package directions, using the fat-free milk; set aside to cool.
2. Meanwhile, set aside 8 small strawberries for garnish; chill until serving time. Hull and slice remaining strawberries and, in a medium bowl, combine with sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla; set aside.
3. Arrange ladyfingers in bottom and up sides of a 2½-quart glass serving bowl. Pour sliced strawberries over ladyfingers. Stir remaining 2 teaspoons vanilla into pudding and pour pudding over strawberries.
4. Spread whipped topping over pudding. Cover and chill at least 2 hours before serving. Just before serving, garnish with reserved whole strawberries and the toasted almonds.
TIP: To toast sliced almonds, spread them on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350°F. oven for 6 to 7 minutes, or until just lightly browned.
