With his intelligence and study of ancient languages and mythology – Tolkien make sure that science fiction would never die.

Ken Kesey unleashed One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest into homes in 1964, and took on hypocrisy at its finest. How to conform to modern life; how to deal with the icy power-hungry people in this world that the horrific Nurse Ratched personified – it was all there. His book took liberation to a whole new plateau.

And let’s not forget the REAL YA fiction that made a difference in this world. Judy Blume is, was, and will always be the master at explaining and helping the hearts and souls of youth. The experiences, pain and relentless pressure that they feel each and every day was always addressed and addressed immaculately by Judy Blume. Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret came out in 1970 and people could almost feel the sigh of relief. Why? Because with Blume, parents no longer had to be afraid to talk to their children about sex and religion – because this incredible author had opened the doors to both.

Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen…there simply isn’t enough paper to list them all. We, as a culture, are extremely lucky to have been given these unbelievably fantastic authors who have saved lives, changed minds, and helped readers from all walks of life understand, give, take, love, laugh, cry, and learn. However these authors, during their time periods, were not given million-dollar contracts. They were not constantly fighting for an agent or a publisher…and they didn’t care. Their names became huge over time and their “voice” gave other people theirs. That was what made writing wonderful!

He spoke of the ‘B&B’ that were a part of the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations, telling all readers that even though the ‘right’ schools were attended and they all followed the supposedly ‘right’ procedures when engineering the Vietnam War, the ridiculousness that happened was inexcusable. This was a man who was a sheer skeptic of these ‘elite’ people, telling the readers about his own background working as a student busboy in the cafeterias at Harvard, surrounding himself with the supposed ‘best and brightest’ who had not a brain between them. He refused to shake hands with generals who simply thought they deserved respect because of the stars on their shoulder, and the debate he opened up regarding the Vietnam War and the senseless deaths of more that 50,000 Americans in the rice paddies made some see red – while others simply nodded their heads in complete agreement.

Stephen King came along and offered one of the smallest memoirs in history – and the one that caused the biggest impact on the writing world. On Writing, to this day, is seen as the most practical and unpretentious writer’s manual around, told from the POV of one of the world’s most beloved novelists.

Without Julia Child, no one would’ve been able to Master the Art of French Cooking from 1961 until today. Frankly, without this amazing work of nonfiction, we might all still be eating Jell-O salads and other equally ‘icky’ creations.

Truman Capote had readers on the edge of their seats as he put forth a nonfiction novel telling the unforgettable story of, In Cold Blood. This genre-bending book had the world engrossed in 1966, when a small newspaper blurb about the grisly murder of a Kansas farmer and his family intrigued Capote so much, that he spent years digging into the context and aftermath of the crime; interviewing true killers and recreating the bloody carnage.

Woodward & Bernstein…All The President’s Men. A nonfiction book that changed the political culture of a country; a work that literally brought down a presidency and launched a thousand reporting careers. SEBASTIAN, FL, OCTOBER 11, 2011 — “Up the River with a Paddle,” the first-ever paddling race on the beautiful St. Sebastian River, is coming up on Nov. l9th. It is open to competitive and recreational paddlers of all ages and skill levels – Kayakers, canoers, paddle boarders and anyone who can make it up the river with a paddle! Grab the family and enjoy this fun day on the river with food, entertainment, raffle and prizes.  Races include short and long distances and the “Beat Mike Beck Challenge” for cash prizes. Groups, clubs and businesses can compete for the title of “Best Team in the County” in a giant, Elephant Canoe. The event will be held on Nov. l9th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dale Wimbrow Park, 11805 Roseland Road, Sebastian, FL. It is sanctioned by the American Canoe Association (ACA) and is being coordinated by Florida Outdoor Center.  Proceeds will benefit By the River, the area’s independent residential community for low-income seniors (for more information, please visit www.BytheRiver.org).
